Philippines: Mayon volcano alert level raised Jan. 22 /update 6

Eruption of Mayon volcano possible within hours or days after explosion of ash on January 22; alert level raised one notch

Warning

Event

The Mayon volcano, the Philippines’ most active, exploded thunderously on Monday, January 22, prompting the authorities to raise the alert level to four (on a five-tier scale), indicating that an explosive eruption is possible within hours or days. The danger zone around Mayon was expanded to 8 km (4.9 mi) due to the risks of rockfalls, landslides, and lava flows. The city of Legazpi and nearby areas were under a rain of fine ash and sand, forcing motorists off the roads due to reduced visibility.

Context

Nearly 40,000 people have already fled the area surrounding the Mayon volcano (Albay province). Authorities have erected checkpoints on roads leading to the volcano to prevent tourists from approaching the hazard zone.

Significant transportation disruptions are expected in the event of a major eruption. Civil aviation authorities have been advised to avoid flying near the volcano crater due to the risk of sudden eruption.

The volcano last erupted in 2014, which prompted thousands of people to evacuate adjacent areas.

Advice

Individuals present in or intending to travel to the affected area are advised to monitor the situation, follow any instructions issued by the local authorities (e.g. evacuation orders), and wear respiratory masks and to wear covering clothing to protect skin from abrasive ash.
