Officials report continuing high influenza activity during 2017-2018 flu season; take precautionary measures

Officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported on January 5 that influenza activity in the United States had increased sharply in the final week of 2017. High flu activity has been reported in 26 states and several major cities, including New York City and Washington, DC. Between October 1 and December 30, 2017, 3927 flu-related hospitalization were reported nationwide, a record number. Overall, influenza-like illnesses have been reported in 46 states. Flu season in the United States typically begins in October or November, and can run through as late as May.

Influenza is a contagious virus that can spread from human to human. Symptoms include high fever, aching muscles, headache, and respiratory issues. Particularly vulnerable individuals include young children, the elderly, pregnant women, the obese, and individuals suffering from chronic diseases. An annual vaccine is available.
