Jordan: Anti-austerity protests in Amman Feb. 1 /update 1
Hundreds of Jordanians demonstrate against austerity measures in Amman February 1; further protests highly likely nationwide
Event
On Thursday, February 1, hundreds of Jordanians took the streets of downtown Amman to denounce recent austerity measures implemented by the government, including a doubling of bread prices. Protesters gathered in front of the parliament buildings, some calling for the dismissal of Prime Minister Hani al-Mulki and his cabinet.
Further such demonstrations are highly likely throughout the country in the coming days and weeks.
Context
In January 2018, the Jordanian government increased the prices of fuel and bread, as well as the value-added tax on various consumer goods such as cigarettes, carbonated drinks, and jewelry. These austerity measures have led to numerous anti-government protests. In 2017, protests erupted following a similar increase in consumer prices.
Advice
Individuals in Jordan are advised to avoid all demonstrations as a precaution and to keep abreast of the situation.
