Philippines: Earthquake drill in Quezon City February 15

Authorities to hold earthquake drill in Quezon City February 15; transportation disruptions possible

Warning

Event

The Philippines’ First Quarter Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill will be held on Thursday, February 15, at 14:00 (local time) in Quezon City. The drill will be held in four areas of the city, namely around Veterans Hospital, Quezon Memorial Circle, Quezon City Hall, and QC General Hospital, with Quezon Memorial Circle serving as an evacuation site. Transportation disruptions in the area are possible.

Context

The drill is intended to test the government's earthquake preparedness plans, as well as to raise awareness of the latent risk of earthquakes throughout the country.

The Philippines lies within the active seismic zone known as "the Pacific Ring of Fire." In July 2017, a magnitude-6.5 earthquake hit the island of Leyte, killing four people and injuring at least 100 others.

Advice

Individuals in Quezon City should anticipate transportation disruptions at the time of the drill.
