Samoa: Cyclone Gita brings flooding Feb. 9-10

Tropical Cyclone Gita struck Samoa on Friday, February 9, and Saturday, February 10, bringing heavy rain and strong winds. While no casualties were reported, significant flooding and infrastructural damage occurred throughout the country. Heavy rain remains in the forecast for the coming days, exacerbating the risk of further flooding, landslides, and power cuts.

Transportation disruptions are likely to persist in the coming days. However, flights at Faleolo International Airport (APW) appear to be operating normally.

Cyclone season in the region typically lasts from November to April but storms can occur outside this period.

Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded.
