Violent protests break out in Port of Spain early Monday, February 19; avoid the affected area

Violent protests broke out in the capital Port of Spain early on Monday, February 19. Residents have erected roadblocks on Basilon, Picadilly, and Laventille streets, located just east of the downtown area. The unrest was triggered by the killing of a resident in the area by police around 03:00 (local time). Police and soldiers have been deployed to the area and a heavy security presence remains in place as of around 08:30.

Context

According to police, Monday’s killing occurred during a shootout. However, residents claim police shot the man while he was asleep.
