United Kingdom: London City Airport closed due to unexploded WWII bomb Feb. 11

London City Airport (LCY) closed after unexploded World War II bomb found in River Thames February 11; adjacent roads closed

Warning

Event

London City Airport (LCY) remained closed as of late on Sunday, February 11 (local time), after an unexploded World War II bomb was found in the River Thames at the George V dock (E16) earlier on the same day. The bomb was reportedly found early on Sunday morning during scheduled work at the airport; bomb disposal crews were on the scene and still attempting to safely remove the bomb as of late on Sunday. The London Metropolitan Police Force implemented a 214-meter (700-foot) exclusion zone around the bomb beginning around 22:00 on Sunday and cordoned off adjacent roads. It is unclear when the affected roads will reopen. Associated air transportation disruptions (including numerous flight delays and cancelations) are expected at LCY, as well as road traffic disruptions in nearby areas, in the coming hours.

Advice

Individuals in London are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid traveling to LCY until further notice, anticipate related air transportation disruptions, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities. Persons planning on flying to, from, or through LCY in the coming hours are advised to confirm all flight reservations and to contact their airline for more information.
