Australia: Tropical Cyclone Marcus brings adverse weather March 17-18

Futher adverse weather and travel disruptions are expected as Tropical Cyclone Marcus moves across Northern Territory and Western state on Sunday, March 18. Marcus has weakened to a category 1 system, and is currently tracking across the far north Kimberley in a west-southwesterly direction. The Australian Bureau of Meteorology has issued a warning for gale force winds and forecasts heavy rainfall and possible flooding over the north Kimberley region, particularly between Kalumburu and Kuri bay, throughout Sunday. The cyclone is expected to move over onto the Indian Ocean early on Monday morning, where it will re-intensify as it tracks westwards way from the country.

The storm has already resulted in damage to much of the region, including Darwin, where one in three properties are reported to be without power. Schools across the city will remain closed on Monday, March 19 as emergency services work to restore power and water supplies. Darwin residents have been advised to drink bottled water and use only boiled water for cooking due to the risk of contamination. Disruption to travel is expected in the city and surrounding areas over the coming hours, as traffic signals currently not working. Operations at Darwin International Airport (DRW) resumed at 00:00 (local time) on Sunday following moderate disruptions to flights; residual delays are possible.
