Nationwide parliamentary elections for the 605 deputies of the National Assembly of People’s Power will take place on Sunday, March 11. The vote is voluntary but government pressure typically leads to high voter turnout, with around 95 percent of eligible voters usually going to the polls. Transportation and commercial disruptions may occur during the election.

Context

The parliamentary elections are the second step in the nation’s political cycle, municipal elections were held in November 2017 and on April 19, the National Assembly will elect the new president as current President Raúl Castro has stated he will not seek another term.
