Indonesia: Increased criminal activity in Jakarta
Police warn of a recent increase in criminal incidents in Jakarta; multiple attacks perpetrated by groups on motorcycles
Event
Police have warned of a recent increase in criminal incidents in the Kemang and Jalan Sudirman areas of Jakarta in March. This uptick has included violent assaults along the Jalan Kemang Raya, a popular road filled with restaurants, bars, and shops frequented by both local and expatriate residents. Women have also reported instances of groping when walking alone. According to victims, many of these attacks have been perpetrated by groups of males on motorcycles (biker gangs).
Context
Theft (including "snatch and grab" incidents by individuals on motorcycles or mopeds), armed car-jacking, and residential break-ins are relatively common in Indonesia, and a rise in petty theft (e.g. pickpocketing) in tourist areas has been reported in recent years. Incidents of criminals drugging individuals in order to later rob them are also reported on occasion. Although organized crime is an issue in the country, it generally poses a minimal risk to foreigners.
Advice
Individuals in Jakarta should maintain a low profile (avoid conspicuous displays of wealth or valuables, etc.), avoid traveling on foot outdoors after dark, and take commonsense precautions against criminal activity (always drive with doors locked and windows rolled up, keep a small amount of cash easily accessible with which to quickly appease a potential thief, etc.).
