Japan: Officials expand warning area around Shinmoedake volcano /update 2
Government expands warning area around the Shinmoedake volcano on March 10 following large explosions
Event
The Japanese Meteorological Agency (JMA) expanded the warning area around the Shinmoedake volcano on Kyushu island on Saturday, March 10. JMA officials increased the area from 3 km (1.8 mi) to 4 km (2.5 mi) following two large explosions at 01:54 and 04:27 (local time) on Saturday morning. According to JMA, there is a risk of large flying rocks within the 4 km zone around Shinmoedake. Smoke emitted from the volcano has also reportedly reached 4500 m (15,000 ft).
Context
Shinmoedake has been erupting since March 1. Japan has 110 active volcanoes and constantly monitors 47 of them. In September 2014, 63 people were killed on Mount Ontake, the worst volcanic toll in Japan for nearly 90 years.
Advice
Individuals present in or intending to travel to the affected area are advised to monitor the situation, confirm travel reservations, follow any instructions issued by the local authorities (e.g. evacuation orders), and wear respiratory masks and covering clothing to protect skin from abrasive ash.
