Kosovo: Serbian politician arrested in North Mitrovica March 26
Authorities arrest head of Serbian Office for Kosovo and Metohija in North Mitrovica on March 26; protests likely to continue in northern cities
Event
Kosovar authorities arrested Marko Đurić, director of Serbia's Office for Kosovo and Metohija, on Monday, March 26, for alleged illegal entry into the country. Kosovar officials had previously banned Serbian officials from entering the country, and warned that they would be arrested upon arrival. The arrest occurred in North Mitrovica (Mitrovica district). Significant protests occurred near Mitrovica Courthouse after the arrest. Furthermore, demonstrators reportedly blocked Motorway 31 at Zveçan, leading to significant transportation disruptions in the area.
Additional protests are likely in northern Kosovo in the coming days, as well as an increased security presence. Violent clashes between protesters and security personnel cannot be ruled out.
Context
Serbian-Kosovar relations remain tense a decade after the country declared independence from Serbia in 2008. Kosovo maintains a large Serbian minority that largely supports reintegration with Serbia.
Advice
Individuals in Kosovo are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
