Papua New Guinea: 6.9-magnitude earthquake strikes New Britain March 30

A 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck New Britain at 06:25 (local time) on Friday, March 30. According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake hit some 145 km (90 mi) east of Kimbe. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PWTC) issued an alert warning that the earthquake may trigger hazardous tsunami waves along the coasts of Papua New Guinea within 300 km (186 mi) of the earthquake's epicenter, potentially including at Rabaul by 06:52 and at Ulamona by 07:28. Aftershocks are possible in the coming hours.
