Paraguay: Farmer demonstrations in Asunción March 21-22

Events organized by campesinos (peasant farmers) are set to take place in the capital Asunción on Wednesday, March 21, and Thursday, March 22. On Wednesday, demonstrators will gather beginning at 08:00 (local time) in the Plaza de la Democracia. Beginning at 09:30, caravans of campesinos from the north and the east of the country are expected to arrive in the city.

The main event, the 25th Annual Campesino March (25ª Marcha Campesina), will take place on Thursday beginning at 08:00. Demonstrators will march from the Seminario Metropolitano park to Plaza Uruguaya, where a series of debates will be held until 19:00, at which time participants will move to the nearby Plaza de la Democracia.

Associated traffic disruptions are to be anticipated, although event organizers have said they are trying to minimize their impact on transportation. An increased security presence is likely.
