USA: Teacher strike in Puerto Rico March 19

Territory-wide teacher strike in Puerto Rico Monday, March 19; school closures and protests possible

Warning

Event

Teachers throughout Puerto Rico are set to hold a 24-hour strike on Monday, March 19, to protest plans to create charter schools. The strike could lead to school closures. Associated demonstrations are possible, for example in the capital San Juan in front of the Ministry of Education building. Other groups could join the mobilization in solidarity with the teachers, notably retirees.

Context

The union behind the strike fears the establishment of privately-run charter schools will lead to the closure of certain public schools (notably those serving rural communities) and will divert funding away from the public education system.

Advice

Individuals in Puerto Rico are advised to avoid all protests as a precaution.
