Warning

Event

Heavy rain has led to severe flooding in Bujumbura, killing at least five people since Friday, April 13. According to local sources, a total of 11 people have been killed since March 1, with 50 more reportedly injured in multiple landslides that have occurred in recent weeks. The most affected areas include Bujumbura's Carama 2 neighborhood in Kinama. Significant flood-related material damages, including the flooding and destruction of at least 250 homes, were also reported. Further flooding is likely in Bujumbura, as rain is forecast to continue in the coming week.

Context

Heavy rain and flooding is common in Burundi during the annual rainy season (March to May).

Advice

Individuals present in affected areas are advised to keep abreast of the situation, to avoid areas directly hit by flooding, and to adhere to any orders issued by the local authorities or their home governments. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded. Be aware that the risk of contracting water- and mosquito-borne diseases tends to rise after periods of heavy rains.
