Côte d'Ivoire: Ongoing water shortages in Bouaké

City of Bouaké experiencing a water shortages as of April 12, due to a lack of rainfall in recent weeks; take precautionary measures

Warning

Event

As of Thursday, April 12, the central city of Bouaké continues to suffer from water shortages, which have been ongoing for two weeks amid a drought. The national water company Sodeci has introduced water rationing measures on an alternating basis between districts throughout the city. Tanker trucks are being deployed to affected districts, with rotations scheduled every other day in certain neighborhoods. Longer-term solutions, such as drilling emergency wells, are planned in the coming days. Hospitals, the university, and prisons are being provided with water via Sodeci, the fire department, and the National Office of Sanitation and Drainage.

Context

The shortages are due to low rainfall coupled with quarry work that has accelerated the decline of water used to supply the city's power dam.

Advice

Individuals in Bouaké are advised to conserve water, stock up on bottled water, keep abreast of the situation via local media outlets, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities (e.g. water rationing measures).
