4.7-magnitude earthquake hits central Italy April 10; minor damages and disruptions reported

Warning

Event

On Tuesday, April 10, at 05:11 (local time), a 4.7-magnitude earthquake hit the Marche region of central Italy. The epicenter was located in the town of Muccia, in a region that witnessed devastating earthquakes in 2016. Some minor damages and disruptions have been reported, including train delays and school closures. No serious injuries were reported.

Context

A 6.2-magnitude earthquake in 2016 in the same region killed nearly 300 individuals and destroyed villages; two months later powerful quakes in the region caused considerable physical damage. In Muccia, many of the town's residences remain uninhabitable and more than half of the population lives in emergency housing.

Advice

Individuals in affected regions are advised to be prepared for possible aftershocks.

Generally speaking, after a powerful earthquake, check for damages and take note of your surroundings. If indoors, shut off water, gas, and electricity lines and evacuate the building.
