Japan: Possible disruptions due to storm April 14-15
Powerful storm forecast to hit Japan April 14-15; power outages and transportation disruptions (including flight delays and cancelations) possible across the country
Event
A powerful storm is expected to bring heavy rains and high winds to Japan from Saturday, April 14, to early on Sunday, April 15 (local time). The storm is forecast to dump 5-10 cm (2-4 in) of rainfall, with localized higher rainfall totals possible; snowfall is possible in higher elevations on Hokkaido. Among the regions with the greatest risk of consequent flooding are western Kyushu, the southwest-facing slopes of mountainous areas on Shikoku, and in central and western Honshu. Associated landslides are possible. Forecast high winds gusting to 80-95 km/h (50-60 mph) may notably cause power outages in Tokyo; power outages are also possible in other cities forecast to be affected by high winds, including Osaka. Flight disruptions, including delays and cancelations, are expected in affected areas, notably including in Nagasaki and Kumamoto. Lingering power outages and transportation disruptions are possible even after the storm dissipates on Sunday.
Advice
Individuals present in affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, confirm travel reservations, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded.
