Paraguay: EPP clashes in Arroyito April 7-8

Clashes between Paraguayan troops and members of the Paraguayan People's Army guerilla group (Ejército del Pueblo Paraguayo; EPP) broke out in Arroyito (Concepción department; north) on Saturday, April 7, and Sunday, April 8. Two security force personnel were injured; casualty numbers on the EPP side are unknown. Ammunition, hand grenades, other weapons, military uniforms, and telecommunications equipment were seized.
Military operations to search for members of the EPP are expected to continue on April 9 in the area.
Context
The EPP, Paraguay’s most prominent guerrilla organization, is mainly present in the northeastern departments of Concepción, Canindeyú, and San Pedro. While guerrilla groups in Paraguay are relatively small (the EPP is believed to have between 50 and 150 members), they do occasionally carry out attacks and kidnappings, notably against security forces. The EPP has been active since 2008 and is believed to have been responsible for 50 deaths since its founding.
