Philippines: 6.2-magnitude earthquake strikes Mindanao, April 5

Event

A 6.2-magnitude earthquake has struck off the coast of the southern island of Mindanao on Thursday, April 5. The epicenter of the quake was 128 km (80 mi) east of the island’s major city Davao, at a depth of 61 km (38 mi). There have not been any immediate reports of casualties or major damage. Aftershocks are possible.

Context

The Philippines lies within the active seismic zone known as "the Pacific Ring of Fire." In July 2017, a magnitude-6.5 earthquake hit the island of Leyte, killing four people and injuring at least 100 others.

Individuals in the Philippines are advised to monitor the situation and be prepared for further aftershocks.

In the event of further earthquakes and aftershocks, individuals should protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), to move away from windows and exterior walls (ideally in a corner), and to not attempt to leave the building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
