Rwanda: Deadly and destructive rains

Torrential rains on April 23 result in 18 deaths and destroy at least 80 houses

Warning

Event

Eighteen people were killed and some 80 houses were destroyed across Rwanda following torrential downpours on Monday, April 23. The most affected areas include the north, the capital Kigali, and the town of Gatsibo (east). In total, at least 56 hectares (138 acres) of crops were destroyed. Transportation disruptions are to be expected in affected areas and power blackouts cannot be ruled out. Further rainfall is forecast for the coming days.

Context

Monday’s storm follows heavy rains and thunderstorms that killed some 50 people between January and mid-April.

Storms and severe floods can impact Rwanda during the rainy seasons (from February to April and again from November to January). Flooding can provoke landslides, especially in rural areas.

Advice

Individuals present in Rwanda are advised to avoid areas prone to landslides and to adhere to all instructions issued by the authorities.
