Tunisia: Campaign period for municipal elections begins April 14
Campaigning for the May 6 municipal elections begins on April 14; increase in political events expected in coming weeks
Event
The campaign period for Tunisia's upcoming municipal elections officially began on Saturday, April 14. Political rallies and other events are to be expected in the coming weeks, before Tunisians nationwide head to the polls on May 6 to vote for members of the country's 350 municipal councils. Heightened security measures and traffic disruptions are to be anticipated in the vicinity of any political event.
Context
In 2011 Tunisia's municipal councils were dissolved and replaced by provisional "special delegations." Municipal elections to replace the special delegations were originally scheduled for October 30, 2016, but were postponed several times, due in part to disputes over the composition of the country's electoral commission.
Advice
Individuals in Tunisia are advised to keep abreast of the situation and avoid all protests as a precaution, as well as polling stations on election day.
