Tunisia: Seaport workers on strike April 26-28

Tunisian seaport workers to go on strike April 26-28; disruptions to sea transportation expected

Warning

Event

The Tunisian National Chamber of Port Services (CSNPS) has announced that port workers across the country will go on strike from Thursday, April 26, to Saturday, April 28. Significant sea transportation disruptions are expected if no agreement is reached between the CSNPS (and parent industrial employers' confederation UTICA) and the Tunisian Ministry of Transport in the coming days.

Context

The CSNPS has claimed that the Office of the Merchant Marine and Ports (OMMP), under the Ministry of Transport, has not taken action to mitigate the risk of bankruptcy facing a company in the sea transport sector. Moreover, the CSNPS has claimed that government policies have exposed sea transport companies to unfair competition; according to UTICA, such policies may drive several Tunisian companies out of business.

Advice

Individuals in or planning travel to Tunisia are advised to monitor developments to the situation and confirm travel reservations if planning on traveling to or from Tunisia by sea vessel during the announced strike dates.
