Zimbabwe: Nurse strike launched April 16

Zimbabwe Nurses Association launches indefinite strike April 16 over allowances

Warning

Event

The Zimbabwe Nurses Association launched an indefinite strike on Monday, April 16. According to media reports, the strike left public hospitals understaffed on Monday, especially in Harare and Bulawayo. The protest leaders have said that they will only end the strike once they receive firm commitments from the government to meet their demands. Associated demonstrations are possible.

Context

Nurses decided to strike after the government failed to pay allowances promised since 2010. The group is also calling for better working conditions and more resources for hospitals.

Hospitals were also hit by staffing issues during a month-long strike by junior doctors that ended on April 2.

Advice

Individuals in Zimbabwe are advised to avoid any demonstrations due to the potential for violence, to confirm medical appointments, and to anticipate severely reduced services and long waiting times at hospitals.
