Afghanistan: Taliban and police clash in Takhar province May 29-30

Event

Clashes between police and Taliban militants broke out overnight May 29-30, in the Dasht-i-Qala district of Takhar province (north). At least two police officers and five Taliban militants were killed in the fighting; an additional two officers and four Taliban militants were wounded.

Context

The Taliban have increased their presence in northern regions of the country in recent years.

On April 25, the Taliban issued a statement announcing the launch of their annual spring offensive, which coincides every year with the arrival of warmer weather that allows militants to move more easily over Afghanistan's mountainous terrain. The terrorist group has since launched multiple attacks in Kabul, Badghis, Farah, and Ghazni provinces, killing dozens of security forces and civilians.
