Australia: Flash flooding in Hobart (Tasmania); evacuations ordered May 11

Major flash floods in Hobart city lead to mass evacuations May 11; no casualties reported thus far

Warning

Event

Nearly 13 cm (5 in) of rainfall was recorded within a 24-hour period on Friday, May 11, in the Tasmanian city of Hobart. Due to severe flooding, authorities ordered mass evacuations. Thousands of houses are currently without power, and strong winds tore roofs off residences. No casualties have been reported thus far. Continued bad weather conditions are expected in the coming days.

Advice

Individuals present in the Hobart region are advised to keep abreast of the situation, avoid areas directly hit by flooding, prepare for associated transportation disruptions, and adhere to any orders issued by the local authorities (e.g. evacuation orders). Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded.
