Côte d'Ivoire: Water shortages in several cities May 2 /update 2

Several cities throughout Côte d'Ivoire experiencing water shortages as of May 2 due to lack of rainfall in recent weeks; take precautionary measures

Warning

Event

As of Wednesday, May 2, the central city of Bouaké continues to suffer from water shortages - ongoing for more than a month amid a drought - despite the start of emergency well drilling. In Niakaramandougou, located 500 km (310 mi) north of Abidjan, residents protested on April 26 to demand water, which had also been cut for several weeks. The situations in Tortiya (North), Ferkessédougou (North), and Odienné (Nortwest) are reportedly similar. However, according to the national water company in Côte d'Ivoire, recent rainfall in Ferkessédougou and Odienné should help alleviate the situation.

Advice

Individuals in affected areas are advised to conserve water, stock up on bottled water, keep abreast of the situation via local media outlets, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities (e.g. water rationing measures).
