Afghanistan: Attacks in Takhar and Logar provinces June 28

Event

Two deadly attacks were carried out in Takhar and Logar provinces on Thursday, June 28.

In the first incident, Taliban militants attacked a security post in the Chah Aab district of Takhar province around 03:00 (local time). At least 16 border police officers were killed and six are missing.

In Logar province, eight civilians were killed and four injured in a bombing carried out around midday in the Charkh district. The bomb reportedly detonated during a peace march. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack as yet; however, Taliban involvement is suspected.

Context

On April 25, the Taliban issued a statement announcing the launch of their annual spring offensive, which coincides every year with the arrival of warmer weather that allows militants to move more easily over Afghanistan's mountainous terrain. The group has since launched multiple attacks across the country, killing security forces and civilians.
