Japan: Weather warnings for the south June 29-30

Flooding, landslides, and thunderstorm warning issued for Nagasaki, Shikoku, and Kyushu (south) and Tokai (center) June 29-30

Warning

Event

The Japanese weather authorities have issued warnings over likely flooding, landslides, and thunderstorms for Nagasaki prefecture for Friday, June 29. In the morning (local time), as much as 11 cm (4 in) of rainfall was recorded in Minamishimabara (Nagasaki prefecture). Strong winds and tornadoes are possible across the prefecture.

Torrential rain is also forecast for the Shikoku region, with more than 18 cm (7 in) of rain forecast through 06:00 (local time) on Saturday. Heavy rain warnings were also issued for Kyushu (south) and Tokai (center).

Continued adverse weather conditions are possible in the coming days as the monsoon season intensifies.

Context

The Japanese archipelago is strongly affected by the annual Pacific typhoon season, which runs from May to October with a peak of storms in August and September.

Advice

Individuals present in affected areas are advised to follow local weather forecasts and to adhere to any advice issued by the regional authorities (e.g. potential evacuation orders). In the event of flooding, keep in mind that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products.
