Multiple explosions and gunfire heard in the Chaharai Marastun area of Jalalabad July 31; avoid the area

Local sources reported multiple improvised explosive devices (IEDs) detonations and small arms fire in the Chaharai Marastun area of Jalalabad (Nangarhar province) at approximately 11:40 (local time) on Tuesday, July 31. According to officials, multiple gunmen are attacking the Department of Refugees and Returnees building. Afghan security forces have deployed to the area and security cordons are in place. Details are still emerging.

Context

Suspected militants launched a complex attack on a midwife training center in Jalalabad on Saturday, July 28, killing three people and wounding seven others. Both of the assailants were killed in the operation; one died when detonating a suicide bomb while the other was killed following an hours-long gun battle with security forces. The Islamic State (IS) later claimed responsibility for the attack.
