Haiti: Violent protests cancel flights in Port-au-Prince July 8 /update 1

Violent protests continue in Port-au-Prince July 8, canceling flights at Toussaint Louverture International Airport (PAP); telecommunication disruptions reported, with American citizens advised to shelter in place

Critical

Event

Violent protests have continued to rock Port-au-Prince on Sunday, July 8, over now-scrapped plans by the Haitian government to raise the prices of gasoline, diesel, and kerosene. At least three people were killed in related protests on Friday, July 6. The US Department of State has accordingly advised American citizens to continue to shelter in place, and to refrain from traveling to Toussaint Louverture International Airport (PAP) unless their flights are confirmed, as flights departing PAP on July 8 have reportedly been canceled. The protests have also caused telecommunications disruptions; protesters have erected roadblocks in various parts of the city, with some shooting and throwing rocks at vehicles attempting to pass through the areas. The US Embassy in Haiti will not provide routine services on Monday, July 9, but will remain open to provide emergency services to US citizens.

Additional protests and clashes between demonstrators and security forces are expected in Port-au-Prince, especially in the Pétion-Ville area, in the coming hours, which may cause additional flight cancelations at PAP. A heightened security presence and traffic disruptions are anticipated near protest sites.

Context

All protests in Haiti, even smaller ones, have the potential to disrupt daily life as they often involve roadblocks and/or violence. Further protests to denounce the now-canceled increase in fuel prices are possible in the coming days.

Advice

Individuals in Port-au-Prince are advised to monitor the situation, strictly avoid all protests and associated roadblocks due to the high likelihood of violence, and shelter in place. Confirm flight reservations before traveling to the airport and contact your airline for more information.
