The death toll from landslides and floods caused by widespread torrential rain in the western part of the Japanese archipelago now exceeds 110, with over 80 people still unaccounted for. Among the hardest-hit regions: Hiroshima, Okayama, Ehime, Kyoto, Yamaguchi, Fukuoka, Kagoshima, Hyogo, Shiga, Gifu, Kochi and Saga prefectures.
Context
Many people are still stranded inside their homes. Evacuation orders or advisories have been issued to 6 million people in 20 prefectures. For thousands of households, water supply and electricity remain cut off. Road and rail transportation are suffering severe disruptions, with over 200 landslides in 30 prefectures, dozens of large flooded areas and several major expressways entirely closed due to damages.

Individuals present in western Japan in impacted areas are advised to minimize transportation and outdoor activities, to monitor the weather conditions and obey all instructions issued by local authorities.
