Malaysia: 35,886 cases of hand, foot, and mouth disease in 2018

According to health officials in Malaysia, 35,886 cases of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) have been reported nationwide between January 1 and July 21. Malaysia's Ministry of Health has implemented a series of public health measures, including increased monitoring and public awareness campaigns, to hinder further spread of the disease.

Context

HFMD is a viral infection that mostly affects children. Symptoms include blister-like rashes on the hands, feet, and mouth, and usually occur three to six days after contact with the virus. The virus spreads through coughing and sneezing, as well as infected stool.

All those present in Malaysia are advised to take the necessary measures to protect themselves against contact with infected individuals and to wash hands and disinfect surfaces frequently. Seek immediate medical attention if exhibiting the abovementioned symptoms.
