Philippines: Army kills eight BIFF fighters in Maguindanao province July 3 /update 1

Event

The Philippine Army killed at least eight members of Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) in two battles in Maguindanao province on Tuesday, July 3. Army officials reported that a clash near Datu Paglas (Maguindanao province) lasted 9 hours as soldiers, supported by airstrikes, fought to expel BIFF fighters from the area, killing at least four. In a separate incident on July 3, an army platoon was ambushed by BIFF fighters in Barangay Pidsandawan (Maguindanao province). In the ensuing battle, four BIFF militants were killed and several firearms were captured. Additional military operations are possible in the area in the coming weeks.

Context

BIFF is an Islamist militant organization and Moro secessionist group active in the Mindanao region. The group has been active since 2008, when it split from the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF). In June, the Philippine Army launched a fresh offensive against rebel groups in the southern provinces, where multiple Islamist militant groups operate.
