Tropical Storm Ampil (Inday) forecast to bring heavy rain and flooding to northern Philippines through July 21; consequent landslides, transportation disruptions, and power outages possible in affected areas

Warning

Event

Tropical Storm Ampil (known locally as "Inday") intensified over the Philippine Sea on Thursday, July 19 and is forecast to bring heavy rains to much of the northern Philippines through Saturday, July 21. Meteorological officials forecast moderate to heavy monsoon rain will affect the Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, Zambales, Bataan, Pampanga, and Bulacan. Flood warnings have been issued for Manila, Bataan, and Rizal. Consequent landslides, transportation disruptions, and power outages are possible in affected areas.

Context

Typhoons and tropical storms regularly strike the Philippines during the monsoon season - which typically spans from November to April in the northeast, and from May to October in the southwest.

Advice

Individuals in the Philippines are advised to follow all instructions as issued by local authorities (e.g. possible evacuation orders), follow local weather forecasts, and verify travel plans prior to setting out. In the event of flooding, remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
