Philippines: Two IEDs reported in Maguindanao July 11-12 /update 2

IED detonates in Maguindanao province without casualties on July 11, second IED safely defused on July 12; exercise caution

At least two improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were reported in Maguindanao province on the evening (local time) of Wednesday, July 11, and on the morning of Thursday, July 12. The first IED reportedly exploded in the Barangay Poblacion area of Datu Paglas without leaving any casualties. A second explosive device was defused by the Philippine Army on the Isulan-Cotabato Highway in Barangay Labulabu 2 on July 12. According to a military spokesperson, the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) are suspected of having laid both IEDs.

Context

BIFF is an Islamist militant organization and Moro secessionist group active in the Mindanao region. The group has been active since 2008, when it split from the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF). In June, the Philippine Army launched a fresh offensive against rebel groups in the southern provinces, where multiple Islamist militant groups operate.
