Afghanistan: At least 39 killed in Gardez suicide attack August 3 /update 1

Event

A complex attack involving gunfire and suicide bombs took place in the city of Gardez (Paktia province) on the afternoon of Friday, August 3 (local time), carried out by two attackers at the Shi'a Khwaja Hussan mosque during Friday prayers. The first attacker reportedly gained access to the mosque by blending in with other worshipers as they entered the building, and opened fire during prayers before detonating his explosives. The second attacker entered the mosque and opened fire on survivors directly following the first explosion, before also detonating his device. Current reporting indicates that at least 39 people were killed and over 80 more were wounded in the attack, although local officials warn that the casualty count may continue to climb. The area surrounding the mosque remained cordoned off as of late Friday evening, overseen by armed Shi'a community members, according to local sources. 

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, but the Islamic State-Khorasan Province group (IS-KP) is suspected. The Taliban have denied any involvement.

Context

Gardez is located approximately 105 km (65 mi) due south of the capital Kabul.

Militants linked to the Islamic State, a predominantly Sunni fundamentalist group, frequently carry out similar attacks on Shi'a targets in Afghanistan.
