At least 50 civilians and security personnel died in clashes in eastern Logar province on Monday night, August 6. Taliban insurgents carried out attacks in the Azra district and surrounding areas, leading to heavy casualties amid long gunfights. Taliban leadership has claimed the responsibility for the attack.

Context

The Taliban, who ruled Afghanistan between 1996 and 2001, have intensified armed attacks against security forces across the country since spring. Located around 50 km (30 mi) south of the capital Kabul, strategic Logar province has experienced severe fighting between security forces and Taliban in 2018.
