Indonesia: Two new earthquakes hit Lombok August 19 /update 10
Two new earthquakes, measuring 5.4-magnitude and 6.5-magnitude, shake Lombok on August 19; additional aftershocks possible in the near-term
Event
Two shallow earthquakes, measuring 5.4-magnitude and 6.5-magnitude, hit Indonesia northeastern Lombok at 11:06 (local time) and 11:10 on Sunday, August 19. Both were approximately 10 km (6.2 mi) deep and located in the northeastern portion of the island, west of Mount Rinjani National Park. No tsunami warnings were issued by the Indonesia Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysical Agency. Additional aftershocks are likely in the near-future.
Context
Lombok is still recovering from two earthquakes, a July 29 6.4-magnitude earthquake that killed 14 people, and an August 5 7.0-magnitude quake that has killed at least 319 people and displaced 270,000 others.
Indonesia lies within the active seismic zone known as "the Pacific Ring of Fire."
Advice
Individuals present in the impacted region are advised to monitor the situation, be prepared for further aftershocks, and heed all instructions issued by local authorities. Individuals elsewhere in Indonesia are advised to defer nonessential travel to the affected areas until further notice.
During an earthquake, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), to move away from windows and exterior walls, and do not attempt to leave the building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from any tall structures, such as buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
