Warning

Event

Significant disruptions are expected in Kabul and across northern regions of the country on Sunday, September 9, during Martyrs’ Day celebrations. In Kabul, large crowds are expected to gather near Massoud Circle and Wazir Akbar Khan. A heightened security presence and traffic disruptions are anticipated in the city throughout the day. Travel to Hamid Karzai International Airport (KBL) may also be affected by the events. There is also a possibility of the Islamic State (IS) conducting attacks targeting the commemorative celebrations.

Context

Martyrs’ Day, also known as Massoud Day, marks the 17th anniversary of the death of Ahmad Shah Massoud, the former leader of the Northern Alliance.

IS claimed responsibility for a series of bombings in Kabul on September 5. The group claimed that approximately 150 people were killed or wounded in the blasts.

Advice

Individuals in Kabul are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid large public gatherings as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities. The security environment in Afghanistan remains complex. Although travel is possible in some areas, other areas should be considered strictly off-limits. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
