Afghanistan: Suicide bombers identified amid Martyrs’ Day celebrations Sep. 9 /update 1

Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANSDF) identified two suicide bombers in Kabul amid Martyrs' Day celebrations on Sunday, September 9. ANSDF shot both suicide bombers and incapacitated one before he could detonate his explosive charge, according to local sources; however, the other suicide bomber managed to detonate his body-borne improvised explosive device (BBIED), wounding at least two people. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.

Violent clashes were also reported between demonstrators and ANSDF troops near Airport Road. Celebratory fire taking place across the city has also landed in private compounds. Roads near celebratory events were closed or partially closed as of Sunday morning (local time). A continuing heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions are expected in Kabul over the coming hours.

Context

Martyrs' Day, also known as Massoud Day, marks the 17th anniversary of the death of Ahmad Shah Massoud, the former leader of the Northern Alliance.

The Islamic State (IS) group claimed responsibility for a series of bombings in Kabul on September 5. The group claimed that approximately 150 people were killed or wounded in the blasts.
