Kenya: Heavy rain prompts flooding on coast September 26

Heavy rain causes flooding and transportation disruptions along the Kenyan coast on September 26; further rain expected in coming days

Warning

Event

Heavy rainfall along the Kenyan coast caused flooding on Wednesday, September 26. Between 5-7.5 cm (2-3 in) of rain fell across the coastal region, including Mombasa, Kwale, Kilifi, Lamu, and parts of the Tana River basin. Rain is expected to continue through Friday, September 28, and has caused concern for further flooding, infrastructure damage, and possible landslides. Transportation disruptions are also possible for the coming days.

Advice

Individuals in coastal Kenya are advised to monitor developments to the situation and anticipate transportation disruptions. Remember that walking or driving through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwaters may contain wastewater and chemical products; all items having come into contact with floodwaters should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded.
