Nigeria: Deadly flooding in several states /update 2

Flooding causes significant damages in Kogi, Niger, Anambra, Delta, Katsina, Kaduna, and Jigawa states; associated disruptions possible

Warning

Event

As of Monday, September 17, heavy rain affecting the country for the past several weeks has caused flash floods and the Niger River to overflow, resulting in property and infrastructural damages as well as deaths. Katsina, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kogi, Niger, Delta, and Anambra states appear to be the most affected. Around 110 deaths have been reported so far in Katsina, Jigawa, and Niger. The situation is likely to deteriorate, with further heavy rain forecasted over the next 72 hours. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) announced that a National Contingency Plan has been activated. Consequent transportation disruptions and power outages are to be anticipated in affected areas.

Context

Torrential downpours are a frequent occurrence during the rainy season - which lasts from May to October - and often lead to significant flooding and traffic disruptions.

Advice

Individuals in or traveling via the abovementioned states are advised to monitor local weather forecasts, avoid areas directly hit by flooding, prepare for associated transportation disruptions, and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities (e.g. evacuation orders). Be advised that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all food discarded.
