Anti-government protests are planned in Manila on Friday, September 21, to commemorate the anniversary of the declaration of martial law by former President Ferdinand Marcos. Context

Since becoming president in 2016, Rodrigo Duterte has pursued an aggressive campaign against drugs in the country that has resulted in the deaths of at least 4500 people, although human rights organizations claim a much higher death toll.

Former President Ferdinand Marcos declared martial law on September 21, 1972, which remained in effect until 1981.
