Government official announce Boracay Island will reopen to tourists on October 26 following six months of rehabilitation projects

Police officials on Boracay confirmed on Monday, September 3, that the island will reopen to tourists on October 26. According to the commander of the Metro Boracay Police Task Force (MBPTF), citizens and travelers will be safe on Boracay following six months of rehabilitation projects. New police centers have been built in Yapak, Manoc-Manoc, and Balabag to improve security on the island and additional officers will also be deployed throughout the Boracay. The Department of Tourism has released a list of 25 hotels and resorts that have met government environmental requirements.
Context
President Rodrigo Duterte ordered a temporary ban on tourism to the island of Boracay, one of the Philippines' most popular tourist destinations, for a period of six months starting on April 26 to allow for infrastructural improvements. The order was issued after it came to light that many of the establishments on the island do not have proper sewage systems and are emptying their waste directly into the sea.
The 1064-hectare island has a permanent population of 56,000 and attracts some 2 million visitors annually.
