Syria: Islamic State ambush in Soueida province September 10

Syrian government forces ambushed by IS militants in Soueida province on September 10

Warning

Event

Islamic State (IS) militants ambushed Syrian government forces on Monday, September 10, in Tulul al-Safe (Soueida province). The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported at least 21 deaths among pro-Syrian government soldiers and eight among IS militants. Soueida province has been the theater of regular clashes between government forces and IS extremists since July 25, which have resulted in more that 250 deaths.

Context

IS retains a significant presence in the region, especially in the desert extending from Damas to the Iraqi border. On September 10, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a US-backed Kurd-Arab coalition, launched an operation against Hajin, an IS-controlled city. SOHR reported at least 27 deaths among IS militants and ten among SDF soldiers.

Advice

Due to extremely poor security conditions, Western governments generally advise against all travel to Syria, with some banning travel to the country. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to any travel to Syria.
