Taiwan: No direct hit from Super Typhoon Mangkhut expected

Latest forecasts indicate Super Typhoon Mangkhut will not directly strike Taiwan; strong rains and winds forecast

Warning

Event

The latest weather forecasts issued on Thursday, September 13, indicate that Taiwan will be spared a direct hit from Super Typhoon Mangkhut, this year's most powerful storm. The storm has changed course, moving now towards the Bashi Channel, which separates northern Philippines from Taiwan. This could change if the size of Mangkhut's storm system enlarges or the storm changes course again. In any case, Mangkhut is still forecast to bring heavy rain to the south and east of the island, places already hit by flooding earlier in the week.

Context

As of Thursday morning (local time), Mangkhut had sustained wind speeds of up to 200 km/h (125 mph), with gusts over 250 km/h (125 mph). The super typhoon is expected to strengthen further on Friday.

Advice

Individuals in Taiwan are advised to minimize nonessential outdoor activities, anticipate transportation disruptions, monitor weather forecasts, and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities.
