India: Multiple clashes in Jammu and Kashmir October 25 /update 1

Event

Multiple clashes between Indian security forces and suspected militants took place in Jammu and Kashmir state on Thursday, October 25. The first incident occurred in Baramulla district when police officers raided a house where militants were believed to be hiding. A gunfight broke out after officers attempted to convince the suspects to surrender, resulting in two militants being killed. On Thursday night (local time) militants assaulted an army camp near Tral (Pulwama district). At least one Indian soldier was killed and another wounded in the attack. The third incident took place in Anantnag district when militants opened fire on security forces near the village of Arwani. At least four militants were killed in the engagement. During the clashes, local youths took to the streets in protest of the operation. A heightened security presence is anticipated in Baramulla, Anantnag, and Pulwama districts in the coming days. Further attacks by militants, as well as operations by Indian security forces, are possible in the near term.

Context

Indian armed forces continue to launch operations against members of the secessionist Hizbul Mujahideen and Lashkar-e-Taiba groups, who challenge India's sovereignty over Kashmir. Tensions have been particularly high in the region in recent months, with often deadly sporadic cross-border shelling and border skirmishes between Pakistani and Indian armed forces at the Line of Control (LoC).
