Indonesia: Deadly earthquake strikes off coasts of Java and Bali Oct. 11 /update 1

Event

A 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck off the coasts of eastern Java and Bali at 02:44 (local time) on Thursday, October 11. The quake's epicenter was located in the Bali Sea, some 40 km (25 mi) north-northeast of Sumberanyar (East Java province) at a depth of 9 km (6 mi), according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). So far, the authorities have reported three related deaths and 23 injured in Sumenep district (East Java province). No tsunami warning was issued and damage, mainly to houses, is limited and very localized. Shaking was also felt in Bali and Lombok, though no damage has been reported there. Aftershocks are possible in the affected areas in the coming hours and days.

Context

Indonesia lies within the active seismic zone known as "the Pacific Ring of Fire." This latest earthquake follows a 7.5-magnitude earthquake and tsunami that struck Central Sulawesi on September 28, killing well over 2000 people.
